Although you have insurance to cover the various contingencies, there are certain practices and responsibilities you should adopt and make known to all your staff. Most are commonsense, and briefly these include:
Good claims practice
You should act in a manner that you are not insured, ie you must make every effort to reduce a loss.
You must protect property that becomes vulnerable as a result of an incident. For example, if a glass door is broken and it allows access to the premises, you should have the glass replaced immediately, or if a glazier is not available, have the door boarded with a material, such as timber, that is difficult to penetrate.
Never admit liability for an incident or claim in the event where a third party is involved, ie damage caused to another’s property or bodily injury.
Obtain as much detail as possible in the event of a claim such as contact names of persons involved, and date, time and place of the incident. Include photos if they will assist the loss adjustor and/or insurer make an informed decision and/or defence of a claim.
